Common Laptop Hinges Problems
If your laptop shows these signs, hinge repair is likely needed.
Screen lifting from the frame
When opening your laptop, the screen separates from the base. Hinges are typically made of metal and are attached to the laptop frame with weak plastic and adhesive.
Cracking sounds when opening lid
Noise during movement usually means the hinge is tight, binding, or already broken. This puts immense pressure on the screen and housing, and will eventually break your screen
Loose or floppy screen movement
If the screen does not stay in position, the hinge has worn out. Over time, this leads to further internal damage.
Stiff hinge hard to open or close
Excess resistance when opening the lid strains the casing. This often causes cracks and mounting point failure.
The No-BS Truth: Why Do Laptop Hinges Break?
We check the hinge, frame, and surrounding structure before repair.

Despite amazing technological advancements everywhere else, laptop manufacturers constantly compromise on hinge durability to save a few bucks.
Instead of investing in stronger construction, many brands resort to gluing thin metal pieces to cheap plastic mounts. They mold fragile plastic directly around the hinge rather than using solid metal inserts. This lacks the mechanical strength needed to withstand everyday movements like opening, closing, and carrying.
The worst part? Manufacturers are perfectly okay with this design flaw, which forces consumers to spend extra money on repairs far too often. Planned obsolescence is great for the economy, but not your wallet!
How We Fix Broken Lid Hinges: Quick and Cheap Option
We can fix this quickly by drilling holes directly through the display lid and using longer screws and nuts.

The downside: It doesn’t look pretty. You will see the nuts on the back of your laptop lid.
The upside: It is mechanically rock-solid, gets the job done cheaply (typically $200 – $250 depending on the model and touch screen status), and avoids long shipping delays.
Want it Perfect? That Will Take Time
Doing it properly means replacing the entire top display lid assembly so it looks brand new.

The downside: For most laptop models, the lids must be ordered online from overseas. This adds an extra $150 – $250 to the cost and requires 1 to 3 weeks of waiting time.
The upside: your laptop will look like the damage never happened.
Most of our customers don’t want to wait weeks. And while the parts are in transit, every day you keep using the laptop, you are taking a risk of cracking the screen, which will add another $300-600 to the repair costs.
What If It Breaks on the Bottom (Keyboard Side)?
The worst part of this repair is when the adhesive between the hinge and the keyboard palmrest fails.
If the hinge rips out from the bottom half of the laptop, in 90% of laptops, it prevents us from being able to drill through and bolt it. Why? Because the bolt heads would sit in the way, meaning you wouldn’t be able to shut your laptop screen properly!
When this happens, it leaves us with no choice but to replace the entire keyboard assembly. This gets expensive – starting from around $300 – and usually takes weeks to order the parts. And now your laptop suddenly became a fragile desktop, unable to be closed and not fall apart!
How to Avoid This on Your Next Laptop
Want to avoid dealing with busted hinges altogether? Don’t buy cheap plastic laptops.
Expensive, premium laptops like Apple MacBooks and Lenovo ThinkPads rarely suffer from these frequent hinge failures. Why? Because they use solid aluminium unibody designs. The hinge mounts are directly integrated into a single metal part, eliminating the need for weak adhesives or glued plastics. It costs slightly more to manufacture (we reckon just a few dollars), but it significantly increases structural integrity and longevity.
When shopping, look beyond just the specs and the price tag:
- Does the laptop feel well-designed and built?
- Does it creak under pressure?
- Does it feel like it’s made from cheap, recycled plastic?
We strongly encourage you to avoid cheap, plastic-hinged laptops and invest in models that use premium materials.
Of course, not everyone has the budget or need for a brand-new premium laptop that could easily cost $2000 or more. If that’s the case, business-grade refurbished laptops are your best bet. Come talk to us in the shop, and we’d be happy to help you find a durable laptop that won’t snap in half after two years!
Why Choose Fix My Laptop for Hinges Repairs
Let’s be real: a lot of repair shops just slap some cheap epoxy on a busted hinge, patch it up, and hand it back to you. That kind of rushed, band-aid approach almost guarantees the exact same problem will return a few months down the line when the glue inevitably fails.
