Blog - Common Malware Types to Watch Out For

Malware infections are more than just an inconvenience – they can compromise your entire system, putting your data, privacy, and security at risk. Many people assume that after running a security scan, their computers are clean. But is that really the case?

Can You Ever Be Certain Malware is Gone?

The short answer? No.

There’s an unsettling but important truth when it comes to malware removal: Once your computer is infected, it’s not truly yours anymore.

Even if your security software claims to have removed the infection, there’s always a chance that something was left behind – especially if you encountered an advanced threat. Some malware can remain hidden, silently collecting your keystrokes, slowing down your system, or making it part of a botnet. Others disguise themselves, waiting for the right moment to strike again.

That’s why removing malware isn’t just about running a scan – it’s about ensuring your system is 100% clean and taking proactive steps to prevent future infections.

The Best Ways to Remove Malware from Your System

Scanning is A Good First Step (But Not a Guarantee)

Most people’s first instinct when they suspect malware is to scan their system using antivirus or anti-malware software. While this is a great starting point, it’s important to understand its limitations. Anti-malware programs can usually only catch something that has already been circulated on the Internet and was analysed by security researchers. No single antivirus suite will protect you from 100% of threats.

It’s best to run several security scans but even then, it’s not a 100% guarantee. On the other hand, having two or more antivirus programs running at the same time is also not advised, as they tend to conflict with each other and make your computer less stable and slower.

Some threats actively evade detection, making it impossible to be completely sure your system is clean. Those are more likely to be used by the government agencies and black hat hackers. It’s very unlikely that third world tech support scammers would be sophisticated enough to employ those, but you can never know!

The Only Two Ways to Be 100% Certain Malware is Gone

If you want an ironclad guarantee that your system is malware-free, you have two choices:

1 – Restore your computer from a clean backup made prior to the infection. Easier said than done. In our experience, 99% of our clients don’t bother baking up regularly, if ever!

2 – Wipe and Reinstall Everything (The Nuclear Option). This is what we tend to do when we suspect there is too much damage done. Even if your computer is badly infected, we can usually save the most important data and restore it onto a clean system.

Preventing Future Malware Infections

The best way to handle malware is to prevent it from infecting your system in the first place. Here are some best practices:

  • Use a reputable antivirus program and keep it updated. We recommend Emsisoft Anti-Malware.
  • Enable automatic software updates to stay protected against vulnerabilities. This usually happens automatically unless you ignore prompts to restart your computer.
  • Practice safe browsing habits and be cautious of phishing emails.
  • Avoid getting scammed and giving “helpful” strangers access to your computer.
  • Create regular system backups to protect your files and operating system.
